Love to all. This is Aras' brother Vytas. I am going to tell you a
little bit about him and his yoga; giving an outside perspective on who
he is and the practice he brings to you.
The awakening happened in Europe. We were there for Aras to play
professional basketball, a sport and a lifestyle that had proven to be
so hard on him and his body. I remember the first utterance of change
from him: "I want to come to a yoga class with you when we get back."
Well, when we got home, I took him to see Bryan Kest and from there it
began. Yoga, the truth that it is, infected every area of his life.
Needless to say, there was a shift at the very root of his existence. A
shift toward the light. Over the years Aras has been taught by many, but
for the most part he has looked toward Ashley Turner, Baba Hari Das, and
S N Goenka for his teachings.
In 2004, Aras opened up his own donation-based studio in Capetown, South
Africa. At the time, there wasn't a single place in town to even buy
yoga mats. With his open heart and his strong desire to share the gift
that had so freely been given to him, people naturally found their way
to Aras' classes simply through word of mouth. By the time he left
Africa, hundreds, even thousands, had been graced with the fortune that
is yoga.
Now back in LA, I get the chance to attend my brother's classes. When I
go to one of them, the first thing I notice is the energy in the room.
He beams a smile from his heart and keeps that love circling for the
entire hour and a half. Yes, the classes are challenging physically, but
as a teacher, Aras does an amazing job of taking my focus off of my body
and bringing it to my mind and breath; the true purpose of yoga. His
classes are always an opportunity and a reminder to work on the things
that will enhance my life; gentleness, non-attachment and compassion.
Leaving the studio after a class with Aras, the smile he beamed to me
seems like it will be plastered on my face forever, a smile that I will
definitely be sharing with the rest of the world. Mmmmmmmm
